Important Dates Fall Semester 2009
Registration for Spring 2010 begins November 2!Fall HighlightsAVTThe new School of Art building officially opened in the fall 2009. The building dedication took place on Friday, October 23, 2009, featuring guest speaker, Dorothy Kosinski, Director of the Phillips Collection. In conjunction with the opening, The Fine Art Gallery showcased work by SoA alumni in an exhibition called “Alumni Mix.” George Mason University now has a student- run gallery, Point in Space, for School of Art students to exhibit their work as well as hold art-related events. The students utilize the space to exhibit their work but also as a gathering spot where they can meet informally for various “think-tank” sessions. They have created a blog that catalogues their activities and to keep their information and plans transparent. It can be found at http://pointinspacegallery.wordpress.com/. John Orrand, BFA Graphic Design, was awarded the Creative Vistas Memorial Award, which honors the memory of Noah Seidenberg, an Art and Visual Technology graphic design student whose enthusiasm for and devotion to art and design continues to inspire others to achieve their best, even when faced with challenging personal circumstances. Tom Ashcraft, Associate Professor in Sculpture, was Mason’s Sustainability Hero for the month of October. Currently the two main projects that have a strong focus on reuse, repurpose and sustainability are: the Container Project and the Bird/Bat house Project. Kate Mattingly was invited by Dance Theater Workshop, the NYC dance theater and commissioning organization, to attend a festival of new choreographers in Serbia. She attended performances on October 2 and 3 to observe and write about these new artists. In October, George Mason dancers auditioned for the opportunity to perform Mark Morris’s masterpiece, GRAND DUO, in their 2010 Gala Concert in March. Joe Bowie, a member of the Mark Morris Dance Group, was selected by Mr. Morris to stage the dance at Mason, and he worked with the cast in an intense ten day rehearsal period. Dan Joyce, Assistant Professor in the School of Dance and former member of the Mark Morris Dance Group, will rehearse the dance through performance. One of the highlights of this project will happen in February when Mr. Morris and his company come to campus to perform in the Arts at Mason series. The entire Mark Morris Dance Group, including Mason dance alumna Rita Donahue, will come into the dance studio to observe the Mason dancers as they rehearse GRAND DUO. This is the fifth of his dances that Mr. Morris has allowed the Mason Dance Company to perform, a matter of great pride to the School of Dance.
