Graduate FAQ's

Domestic Applicants

Q. What is the deadline for submitting applications to the degree programs within the  College of Visual and Performing Arts?

    A. The application deadlines for domestic applicants are     as follows (International applicant deadlines are one     month prior to those listed below):

  • Art MFA - January 15 for Fall Admittance
  • Arts Management - March 3 for Fall Admittance; October 1 for Spring Admittance
  • Arts Management Certificate - March 1 for Fall Admittance; October 1 for Spring Admittance
  • Dance MFA - January 15 for Fall Admittance
  • Graphic Design MA - October 15 for Fall Admittance; April 1 for Spring Admittance
  • MAT - April 1 for Fall Admittance; October 15 for Spring Admittance
  • Music - April 1 for Fall Admittance; November 1 for Spring Admittance
  • Music Certificate - April 1 for Fall Admittance; November 1 for Spring Admittance

Q. When an applicant is admitted into a degree program that starts in the fall, is it possible to begin coursework in the summer?

    A. Degree and certificate programs generally begin in     the fall and spring; permission to begin a degree     program in the summer must be obtained from each     individual department.   

Q. Will Admissions accept a faxed or emailed letter of reference, goal statement or resume?

    A. Letters of recommendation, goal statements, and     resumes may be sent electronically to cvpagrad@gmu.edu

Q. Will Mason accept a transcript that is already in an applicant’s possession?

    A. Transcripts must be original, in a sealed and signed     envelope from the undergraduate institution.

Q. Can the Arts Entrepreneurship Graduate Certificate (15 credit hours) be completed in one semester?

    A. Due to the scheduling of specific classes, the     duration of the Arts Entrepreneurship Graduate     Certificate is two semesters.

Q. How many credits qualify a student as full time?

    A. A full time graduate student must be enrolled in 9     credits per semester. 

Q. Where can an applicant find information concerning the cost of tuition at George Mason University?

    A. Current tuition rates can be found at

Q. Which degree programs offered by CVPA require GREs?

    A. Music DMA and PhD require GRE scores for admissions. All other CVPA degree programs do not require GRE scores at at this time.

Q. Are Praxis scores a requirement for any CVPA degree program?

    A. The Master of Arts in Teaching in Art Education     requires proof of passing score on Praxis I or the     equivalent.  Please refer to soa.gmu.edu for further     details.

International Applicants

Q. Does an international applicant need to send transcripts from every undergraduate institution that he/she attended?

    A. Yes, it is necessary to provide Admissions with     original transcripts from every undergraduate     institution.

Q. What is the international deadline for submitting applications to the degree programs within the College of Visual and Performing Arts?

    A. International applicant deadlines are one month prior     to published deadlines for domestic applicants.

Q. Will admissions accept an electronic scan of an international applicant’s visa and passport?

    A. Yes. An applicant may send an electronic scan of     his/her visa and passport to cvpagrad@gmu.edu

Q. Will Mason accept a bank statement that is already in an international applicant’s possession?

    A. Bank statements must be in a sealed envelope from     the issuing bank.
