Graduate Certificates

Art Education Licensure, Graduate Certificate

This graduate certificate prepares students who hold an undergraduate degree in Art (BA or BFA) for Art Education licensure by the Commonwealth of Virginia. In conjunction with the College of Education and Human Development, the certificate curriculum consists of graduate-level Art and Education courses, field experience observation and pre-service teaching internship. There is an option for teacher licensure in the Art Education, MAT program.

Instrumental Performance Artist, Graduate Certificate

With a distinguished faculty composed of recognized experts in their field in teaching, research and performance, the School of Music offers a rigorous, yet nurturing curriculum that is tailored to today's world of music and the arts. The Artist Certificates are offered as an educational channel to meet the intellectual and career needs of qualified students. It is a comprehensive and advanced program of study in Instrumental Studies that prepares students for a strong career in performance. 

Music Education Licensure for PK12, Graduate Certificate

This graduate certificate prepares students who hold an undergraduate degree in Music (BA, BM, BS, or equivalent) for Music Education licensure by the Commonwealth of Virginia. Piano Performance Artist, Graduate Certificate

Teacher Theater PK-12, Graduate Certificate

The Teaching Theatre Arts Pre-K – 12 Graduate Certificate is a pre-service program that prepares students who hold an undergraduate degree in Theatre (BFA, BA or equivalent) for Theatre Arts licensure by the Commonwealth of Virginia. In conjunction with the College of Education and Human Development, the Certificate curriculum consists of graduate-level Theater and Education courses, field experience observation and pre-service teaching internship.

Theater Education, Graduate Certificate

This graduate certificate prepares students who hold an undergraduate degree in Theatre (BFA, BA or equivalent) for Theatre Arts licensure by the Commonwealth of Virginia. In conjunction with the College of Education and Human Development, the certificate curriculum consists of graduate-level Theater and Education courses, field experience observation and pre-service teaching internship.

Vocal Performance Artist, Graduate Certificate

Doctoral Degrees

Doctor of Musical Arts (DMA)

The Doctor of Musical Arts (DMA) requires 90 credits, 60 credits beyond the Master’s degree in music. Areas of concentrations are composition, conducting, and performance. While these concentrations share some of the required course work, each is also distinct in course requirements. Professional musicians earn the DMA to enhance and extend their knowledge and practice within their area of specialization. The DMA student focuses on the profession of music performance, as well as the theory and practice of the discipline.

Music Education, PHD

The PhD in music education, a research-intensive degree, focuses on the gathering, processing, and interpretation of information. Students in the PhD program take seminars and topics courses in music education, as well as research courses through the College of Education and Human Development. PhD graduates are expected to demonstrate the ability to communicate significant concepts of music education.

Masters Degrees

Art Education, MAT

The School of Art offers a Master of Arts in Teaching in Art Education that has two concentrations: one concentration for those seeking certification (MAT I) as well as a one for licensed art teachers who are continuing education (MAT II).This graduate Art Education program is designed to meet the needs for preparing future teachers as well as advancing pedagogical and research skills of current art educators in the metropolitan DC, Maryland, and Virginia area.

Arts Management, MA

The MA in arts management responds to a growing demand for graduates who can manage and coordinate the arts, bridging the worlds of performing and visual arts with applied managerial skills. The Washington, D.C., region is home to one of the nation’s largest concentrations of arts organizations. The demand for arts managers with skills in financial and budgetary management, strategic management and entrepreneurship, and public relations, including marketing and advertising, has arguably never been more acute.

Computer Game Design, MA

The MA in Computer Game Design prepares graduate students, who may have studied game design at the undergraduate level, or who have degrees in a related technology, humanities, or arts discipline. The program prepares students for employment and further study in the computer game design and development fields, with a curriculum that reflects the gaming industry’s demand for an academically rigorous, technical program coupled with an understanding of the artistic and creative elements of the evolving field of study.

Graphic Design, MA

The Master of Arts in Graphic Design offers students a comprehensive study and preparation for the graphic design profession. The curriculum includes courses in typography, web design, image making, and brand design. The broad range of study is intended to develop professionals prepared for an ever-expanding graphic design field. The applicant’s portfolio is a major selection criterion for graduate admission and should represent the applicant’s most accomplished work. 

Master of Music (MM)

The MM degree is offered as an educational channel to meet the intellectual and career needs of qualified students. Students study with nationally and internationally recognized faculty who are active performers, conductors, composers, music theoreticians, historians, and music teachers. Admission is based on acceptance to the university and audition. It is a comprehensive and advanced program of study with a choice of concentrations in performance, music education, composition, conducting, jazz studies, and pedagogy.

Visual and Performing Arts, MFA

The MFA in Visual and Performing Arts is a terminal degree which prepares students as professional artists and scholars who can work within their specialty (Dance, Graphic Design, Theater, and Visual Art), and teach at the university level. Candidates are required to complete 60 credits, of which 30 are made up from core requirements.
