Fall Opportunities for Veterans

Opportunities for Veterans

The Veterans and the Arts Initiative offers diverse arts opportunities to the Veteran community each season.

The Veterans and the Arts Initiative offers diverse, intergenerational arts opportunities for the Veteran community each season. This August, try your hand at the tiny, musical marvel that is the ukulele in one of two free ukulele workshops (August 6 & 8 or August 27 & 29 ) for Veterans, Servicemembers, their families, and military caregivers.

Also, join us in the fall for the Dominion Energy Veterans Guitar Workshop Series. The Series is on Tuesday evenings from September 3 – November 5; Level I is from 7 – 7:45 p.m., and Level II is from 8 – 8:45 p.m.  Instructor Glen McCarthy shares his guitar expertise in these fun, casual workshops that welcome musicians of all skill levels.  Limited number of guitars are available for those who need to borrow them.

Saturday, September 28 marks the start of the weekly Songwriting Workshop Series for Military Kids that runs every Saturday through November 2 from 1 – 3 p.m. This 6-week series for kids and teenagers promotes songwriting in a collaborative, small group environment and is taught by faculty from George Mason University’s School of Music and the Mason Community Arts Academy. Students may bring melodies in-progress, or come seeking fresh ideas and creative ways to approach music composition. All students will have the opportunity to work in a professional recording studio, and perform their songs at the Celebrating Veterans and the Arts event on November 9. This workshop series is FREE and open to military kids between the ages of 10 and 17. Space is limited. Learn More
