Joseph Walsh is a conductor admired for his ability to combine dramatic flair and theatrical excitement with sensitivity, detail, balance and a keen sense of dramatic pacing. He has served as General and Artistic Director of Lyric Opera Virginia with two decades of experience in presenting and conducting opera in Virginia, across the country and internationally. About Mr. Walsh’ 2012 production of The King and I, Mal Vincent of The Virginian-Pilot wrote: “Billing itself as ‘America’s newest opera company’, Lyric Opera Virginia comes into its own with a theatrical spectacle that rivals that of any company in the country.” Mr. Walsh was involved in the musical preparation of more than sixty-five Virginia Opera productions since first joining the company in 1995, most recently served as its Associate Artistic Director and Associate Conductor from 2008 until 2011. He has conducted many orchestras in operatic performances including the Virginia Symphony Orchestra, the Richmond Symphony, the Kansas City Symphony, the Cluj-Napoca Philharmonic Orchestra of Romania, the Collegium Philarmonicum of Naples and the George Mason Symphony Orchestra. While on the podium at Virginia Opera, he conducted Madame Butterfly, Così fan tutte, Don Giovanni, The Daughter of the Regiment, Susannah, The Elixir of Love, and The Pirates of Penzance. About his acclaimed 2010 production of Don Giovanni, Lee Teply of The Virginian-Pilot’s wrote: “Virginia Opera’s production of Mozart’s “Don Giovanni” which opened Saturday evening at the Harrison Opera House, did the amazing – it did not have imbalances and succeeded on every level. Being one of the greatest of all operas, the experience was one of the best offered by the company in recent years, and one that could rival those of bigger companies.”
Mr. Walsh is currently Music Director for Mason Opera at George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia and runs a private coaching studio in Fairfax. He has served on the Virginia Commission for the Arts Touring Panel and has judged the Middle Eastern District of the Metropolitan Opera’s National Council Auditions in Washington D.C. Mr. Walsh has served on the coaching faculties of the Esther Boyer College of Music at Temple University in Philadelphia and the American Institute of Musical Studies in Graz, Austria.
