Prof. Gerber is Mason’s music and theater librarian, and teaches the core course in music research and bibliography for master’s students. He regularly presents papers at scholarly conferences, including overseas presentations in Amsterdam, Oslo, and Vienna. His primary area of musicological interest is music in 19th-century American culture but he is always on the lookout for interesting treasures tucked away in special collections and archives. Prof. Gerber is also the book review editor for Music Reference Services Quarterly.

Prof. Gerber studied music theory, composition, and electronic music long ago with Kenneth Gaburo, Pauline Oliveros, Roger Reynolds, and Robert Erickson, and later, musicology with Christopher Gibbs, Michael Long, James Currie, and Olivia Mattson. He taught music courses previously at SUNY-Buffalo. Before becoming a librarian, he spent 20+ years in operations management with non-profit museums and arts organizations in northern Minnesota.

An orchestral violist, Gerber performs regularly with the Reston Chamber Orchestra, and in the distant past played electric bass in amateur jazz combos and musical theater pit orchestras, as well as keyboards in a contemporary Christian band. Current research activities include critically editing a 1794 manuscript of cello sonatas for publication, spearheading Mason Libraries’ new involvement with International Music Score Library Project (IMSLP/Petrucci), finishing a paper on a photo of Hitler Youth for a musical iconography conference, and prototyping an online thematic index to bound 19th-century music volumes collected by American writer and reformer Julia Ward Howe. And just for fun, he recently arranged some of Beethoven’s Irish folksong settings for chamber orchestra, to be performed locally in 2016.
