Testing Requirements

Licensure Testing Requirements

Effective July 1, 2019, the Virginia Department of Education no longer mandates entry assessments to state-approved initial teacher licensure programs.

Certain assessments are still required prior to applying for internship (the last semester or year of a teacher licensure program).  See below for details.

Praxis Core Math, SAT Math, or ACT Math

Effective for July 1, 2021, internship application deadlines:  Candidates will not be required to attempt Praxis Core Math, SAT Math or ACT Math prior to internship.

In June 2021, the Council for Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP) will publish a new accreditation workbook which will include the revised CAEP Initial and Advanced Licensure Standards.  In preparation for this change, the College of Visual and Performing Arts will no longer require submission of PRAXIS Core Math, SAT Math or ACT Math when applying for licensure programs.

The following tests are required prior to internship:

Virginia Communication and Literacy Assessment (VCLA)

The Virginia Communication and Literacy Assessment (VCLA) must be passed prior to internship application submission for all initial teacher licensure programs. A composite score of at least 470 must be achieved to meet the VCLA requirement.

Praxis Subject Assessments (formerly Praxis II)

Praxis Subject Assessments tests must be passed prior to internship application submission for CVPA licensure programs.

Find a listing of prescribed Praxis Subject Assessments for applicable endorsement areas (Theater Education, Music Education, Art Education etc.).
